About Participate

The Participate research project has three strands.

  1. Schools – focus on primary and secondary schools and educational centers
  2. Community – focus on local interest groups
  3. Games – focus on creating mobile phone games for young people

In each strand there is a different aim and different partners working on making the project happen. The schools team includes BBC, ScienceScope, BT University of Nottingham and the University of Bath.

The Schools team is interested in how we can support primary and secondary schools across the UK to collect environmental data, create movies and posters about their findings and share their data and outcomes over the Internet.

As Participate is a research project, we are exploring what resources schools would need through this website. The website acts as a central space where schools can share information and collaborate.

For the first stage of the Schools project, we have been working with key actor schools, which have been helping us to test and develop our ideas. These schools are spread across the UK and will be carrying out environmental activities during the summer period in 2007.

The activities we have designed for schools include:

  • Collecting environmental data in their local area using datalogging and GPS equipment as well as digital cameras. Data collected will then be visualised in the 3D animated Google Earth,
  • Participating in the production of a 60 second film about science based issues, and
  • Participating in the production of an exciting digital online science poster.

The outputs from these activities will be uploaded to on the School password-protected parts of this website. Schools taking part will be able to:

  • View their work and that of other schools
  • Build their own collection of material over time
  • Start collaborations with other schools around the country
  • Discuss their findings online

If you are interested in joining Participating, click on the Join link on the home page. We will send you the details about how and when you can join.

Once Schools have joined they will be given a password. All the Schools information and pupils materials (posters, movies etc) will be protected by this password. Information created by schools is only visible to those schools that have been cleared to join in the project.
